They are rivals only if "single place" for all our data means one architecture. The real issue is that the two approaches optimize different guarantees: analytical correctness versus operational scale. A data lake provides schema on read flexibility, immutable append logs, and discovery driven access. A data warehouse delivers strict governance, semantic consistency, and predictable latency. You need both in separate layers, because collapsing them usually damages lineage accountability while increasing cost, access risk, and latency variance.
