Great write up! I am already seeing how a lot of projects are starting to focus on server-side planning.

On one hand, it’s fascinating to see centralized, metastore-backed query planning making a comeback. On the other hand, with 'lite' query engines gaining more traction by the day, it makes total sense not to burden them with downloading and deserializing metadata files.

I think it’s fair to assume the next logical step in this track is metadata caching. And by that, I don’t mean caching just the raw files, but the fully deserialized representation of the metadata.
